Oak Grove Tree Farm is located in Dennison, part of beautiful Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The land was originally purchased by Ephraim Kelley in 1844 and has been passed down through the generations ever since. In 1989, James Kelley "Jim" Owens and his wife Cookie decided he needed a "little project" to keep him busy during retirement. Jim had the idea to start a Christmas Tree farm on the property where he has lived most of his life. After 20 years of planting trees, this little project has become a family endeavor.
In November 2011, Jim and Cookie decided they were ready to enjoy more of their retirement and turned the business, and all of the work that goes with it, over to their four daughters. They are both still a very important part of the business and provide valuable knowledge.
Daughter Lorri helps plant, trim and shape the trees throughout the year. She also cuts the tree that you choose and makes sure it gets loaded securely onto your vehicle. You will often see daughter Ginny helping with sales and loading trees as well. Daughters Karen and Debbie both live out of state but are always on the farm during the annual Open House, making wreaths and door swags, helping with sales and serving hot chocolate and cookies.
In addition to tending to his Christmas Trees, Jim also makes his own authentic maple syrup in the "Sugar Shack" each year. A family favorite, the syrup is usually gone quickly, but you just may get lucky!
